For whom

The course is designed for active cinematographers, directors - cinematographers, assistants from the cinematography division, professional photographers, students of the art of cinematography and photography, people working independently with an artistic/professional background.

Course description

The 'Handheld Camera' is a practical course taught in a small group (up to 12 people). It focuses on the narrative, spatial and emotional possibilities in the use of the camera in 'handheld' work.

It determines and exercises the skills of camera move, stabilization and lack thereof in handheld mode in accordance with narrative assumptions. The activities on the course are based on film scenes with actors and are designed to represent the hardships and advantages of 'handheld' camera work.

Each participant will have the opportunity to work directly and individually with selected tools.

The course will culminate with watching their work in the cinema on the big screen.

The course will be conducted by professional cinematographers, gaffers associated with the Speakers' Avenue collective.

Participants will be selected on the basis of an interview, presenting the candidates' purpose and achievements.

Areas of work

Course instructors

Bartek Bieniek

Cinematographer of feature and documentary films, commercials, music videos and all audiovisual forms. Graduated from Television Production at the Cinematography Department of the Film, Television and Theatre School in Łódź and Film, Television Picture and Photography at the Radio and Television Department of the University of Silesia. Winner of the Golden Tadpole Award at the 2015 Camerimage International Festival of the Art of Cinematography. Also honoured with a Special Award from the Polish Film Institute and a Mastershot at the Camerimage Festival in 2012 for his cinematography in the film "The Feast of the Dead", directed by Aleksandra Terpinska. For the same film, he was honoured with an award for Best Cinematography at the Watersprite Festival in England. In 2020 he was nominated for the Golden Frog at the Camerimage festival for the documentary film "Tomorrow a long day awaits us" . Privately, he believes that life without passion does not make sense.

Bartosz Piotrowski

Bartek has been working as a cinematographer on features, commercials and music videos for 20 years. He is a graduate of the Cinematography Department of the Film School in Katowice. He also works in photography and poster design. Bartek also has extensive experience in conducting educational classes on film topics. Member of the Board of the PSC, Society of Cinematographers.

Piotr Żurawski

Graduate of the Cinematography Department at the Łódź Film School. He taught cinematography knowledge to AFI (American Film Institute). Piotr has worked on feature projects, series, commercials, music videos, documentary projects. A huge fan of 'handheld' camera work.

Grzegorz Pamrów

Graduate of the University of Sydney, Faculty of Arts and Film Studies, and the Sydney Film School. He also graduated from the University of Warsaw and SWPS (Department of Linguistics and English Studies). He has participated in numerous filmmaking workshops organised by Universal Pictures (Australia). He has collaborated with various universities and organisations, teaching courses on art, film: audiovisual, music video analysis, animated film, Hollywood history, film perception, auteur cinema, psychology and cinema. He was Deputy Director of the Film Lab at SWPS (academic / scientific consulting centre - more than 50 film scripts and editing versions). Main areas of interest: aesthetics of film language, audiovisual perception, perception of the human body in relation to 'inorganic' film elements, cinematographic art, film storytelling, creative thinking.
